Puerto Rico qualified from their Nations League A group with a win and a draw against Trinidad and Tobago, but lost twice to Mexico. Their win over Haiti in the preliminary round play-off was a seismic result.

What to expect

With a team based primarily around US-based college players, and with very little experience of international football, they did well to reach the preliminary round, but their 1-0 win over Haiti who had qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup was as an act of giant killing.

Argentina

Argentina qualified as one of the four Conmebol guests at the W Gold Cup with a third placed finish at the 2022 Copa America Feminina.

What to expect

The current Argentinian women’s team does not have the storied history of their 2006 Copa America winning team, but it has the ambition.

Currently ranked 31st in the world, the team is going through a rebuilding phase as the national federation invests in its women’s development programme.

Mexico

What to expect

Unbeaten in the past year, Mexico enter the W Gold Cup as dark horses to lift the trophy. Ranked 30th in the FIFA world rankings, they haven’t made the list of tournament favourites but certainly have an outside shot at going all the way.

The qualified via winning League A Group A, dominating all four games versus Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago, conceding just once whilst scoring 12 of their own.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic qualified for the preliminary knock-out stage as winners of Group B in Concacaf Nations League B, winning five games and losing just once, scoring 24 goals in the process.

What to expect

In the preliminary knockout stage they beat Guyana 1-0 in a game they dominated from start though missed multiple chances.

With players from the US college system mixed with a large number of players who are unattached,

El Salvador

El Salvador qualified for the preliminary play-off after topping Group B of League B in the Concacaf Nations League when they won all six of their matches, with 24 goals from a number of different players.

What to expect

Brenda Ceren led the way in scoring five goals, closely followed by Danya Gutierrez, Samaria Gomez and Danielle Fuentes with four goals each.

In the preliminary round they dominated Guatemala – a nation they had a 7-2 losing record against – running out 3-1 winners,

Panama qualified for the W Gold Cup by topping their League A Nations League group ahead of Guatemala and Jamaica.

What to expect

They have made four appearances at the Conccaf Women’s Championship with their best result being semi-final finish in 2018.

In 2021 they qualified for an inter-continental play-off spot for the 2023 World Cup having finished third in their group at the Concacaf W Championship in Monterey,

Drawn into Group B alongside Panama, Colombia and the CONCACAF Prelims 1 winner (either Haiti or Puerto Rico), Brazil face a favourable run at progressing into the knockout stages of the competition.

Colombia

The Conmebol nation, currently ranked 28th in the world, qualified for the W Gold Cup as one top four teams from the Copa America Feminin.

What to expect

They could be the surprise package of the W Gold Cup, having recently caught the eye in last summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand, being knocked out 2-1 in a close quarter final against England.

In two friendlies against the USA last October they drew the first 0-0 before losing the second 3-0.
