April 24 – Brazilian broadcaster Globo has partnered with streaming platform DAZN to broadcast the inaugural edition of the new Club World Cup.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 14 to July 13 in the United States and will feature four Brazilian clubs: Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Palmeiras.

April 16 – French football is once again teetering on the brink of a financial crisis after domestic media partner DAZN rejected a compromise to end the Ligue 1 broadcast deal. 

During a meeting held by the LFP on April 15, Ligue 1’s board of directors agreed to end the contract at the end of the current campaign following intervention by a mediator, who recommended a compromise that would have seen the streaming platform pay the full amount it owes for this season,

April 15 – LaLiga has confirmed a major overhaul of its audiovisual production structure, appointing Host Broadcast Services (HBS) and Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA) as its lead production partners for the next five seasons—while notably retaining control over content generation, a decision that signals a new phase in the league’s strategy to align broadcast output more closely with commercial partnerships and brand identity.

April 7 – The rocky relationship between broadcaster DAZN and France’s Ligue 1 (LFP) has hit a new low with DAZN considering cancelling its contract at the end of the domestic season.

DAZN has frequently asked LFP to address the piracy issues surrounding the league. In February, DAZN defaulted on its monthly payment to the LFP. The broadcaster withheld €35 million intended for distribution to Ligue 1 clubs and also complained about the lack of content participation from a number of clubs.

March 25 – Globo, the giant of Brazilian broadcasting, has renewed its right agreement with the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) to air elite men’s and women’s competitions. 

The package is a smorgasbord featuring the Supercopa do Brasil, women’s top-tier Brasileirão Feminino, the under-20 and under-17 age-group youth tournaments, as well as Brazilian women’s national team friendlies. These competitions will air on the TV Globo Network as well as the SporTV pay-TV network.

March 19 – A peak UK TV audience of nearly 8 million watched Newcastle United upset Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday to claim the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware.

Figures shared by the EFL show that an average of 6.3 million viewers tuned in across Sky Sports and ITV’s platforms, with the final also broadcast in 193 international territories. The record figures reflect surging interest fuelled by a new broadcast deal allowing every Carabao Cup match to be shown live in the UK for the first time.

February 28 – Piracy used to be a problem relegated to the seven-seas, however in the 21st century, the piracy crisis is fought in the airwaves.
DAZN’s, Head of Global rights, Tom Burrows, speaking at The Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit on Wednesday, said piracy is a huge problem for the broadcaster.

“We’re getting to the stage where it’s almost a crisis for the sports rights industry,” said Burrows.

“Media-rights deals have been done on the basis of exclusivity but I think there’s almost an argument to say you can’t get exclusive rights anymore because piracy is so bad.

February 21 – Sports broadcaster DAZN can’t keep itself out of the news in one way or another. Hot on the heels of agreeing to a billion-dollar investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, they are now embroiled in a row with Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).

DAZN is demanding a whopping €573 million from the league’s governing body claiming they have been duped by LFP in regard to the number of subscribers they hoped to gain when they acquired the rights to the league.

February 18 – The rumours surrounding the Saudi Arabian investment in DAZN can now be confirmed as fact, after SURJ Sports Investment agreed to buy a minority stake in the sports broadcaster. 

SURJ Sports Investment is part of the Saudi fund known as PIF (Public Investment Fund) and was launched in 2023. It will work with DAZN to create DAZN MENA (Middle East and North Africa).
